Online platforms are filled with flawed startup advice.

When I started reading online, these were some of the advice I got:

  • Quit your job at the start
  • Don’t embrace controversy for publicity
  • Don’t attack the market leader
  • Word-of-mouth will start on its own
  • Chase venture capital and never share your ideas with others

It is frustrating when online guidance doesn’t help us navigate startup challenges.

Let’s cut through the noise and discover the no-nonsense strategies of Marc Benioff, who started Salesforce and built a $230B empire.

  1. Don’t be afraid to take time off when you need it.
  2. If your software could help companies increase productivity or sales by 4–5%, your product is worth a billion dollars.
  3. Each piece of existing software will only be replaced by a new version of the software.
  4. You never know how someone else who listens to your ideas might help you.
  5. Talented new engineers don’t join a founder who can’t give them big technical challenges to solve.
  6. Any short-tempered human will never become a successful entrepreneur.
  7. To foster creativity it is necessary to keep people happy and fulfilled.
  8. Ask friends, family and colleagues to test the prototype and offer feedback.
  9. Build UI that people enjoy using. Think simplicity.
  10. Think of it as you want it, not as it is!
  11. Don’t allow others to have your power. Ever.
  12. Separate marketing and sales teams from engineers. Engineers can’t be distracted.
  13. Don’t just quit your job. See where you are in life and if you could take a risk.
  14. Think big even if you are still small.
  15. Position yourself as a revolutionary either by positioning yourself as the leader or against the leader in your industry.
